Gukesh defeated the Russian Grand Master after a 6-hour marathon to rise to the top of standing in the ongoing competition in Toronto.

Praggnanandhaa, Vidit settle for a draw in Round 5

Nepomniachtchi faced a formidable challenge from Gukesh's compatriot, R Praggnanandhaa in an intriguing battle. Employing the Petrov Defence, Praggnanandhaa ventured into uncharted territory with innovative moves, setting the stage for a gripping encounter. While Nepomniachtchi weathered the storm, the game culminated in a draw, showcasing the resilience of both players.

Meanwhile, Vidit Gujrathi's clash with World Number 2 Fabiano Caruana teetered on the brink of a decisive outcome. Despite establishing a commanding position, Vidit faltered in the endgame, relinquishing his advantage and settling for a draw, much to the disappointment of his fervent supporters.

Hiraku Nakamura-Alireza Firouza share spoils

The round also witnessed a surprising turn of events as Hikaru Nakamura capitalised on Alireza Firouzja's lapse in judgment, securing a victory from what appeared to be an imminent draw. Nakamura's astute manoeuvring underscored the fine margins that often determine outcomes in elite chess competitions.

Before the commencement of play, he engaged in a friendly match against the five-time World Chess Champion Vishwanathan Anand, adding a touch of grandeur to the occasion. Subsequently, Andrea Bocelli shared moments of camaraderie with the candidates, including Caruana, his former compatriot, and Nakamura.

FIDE Women's Candidates Round 5 Results

In the FIDE Women's Candidates, all games concluded in draws. Tan Zhongyi, leading the tournament, found herself in a balanced position against Nurgyul Salimova despite having an extra pawn. While Tan maintained her slender lead, she remained cautious of her closest competitor, Goryachkina, recognising the volatility of the competition.

Humpy Koneru's encounter with Aleksandra Goryachkina was characterised by a steady, uneventful progression into an equal endgame, echoing the sentiment of equilibrium prevalent throughout the round. Similarly, Vaishali's match against Anna Muzychuk reached a drawn endgame early on, with both players opting for prudence over risk-taking.

The sole game with the potential for a decisive outcome featured Lei Tingjie against Kateryna Lagno. Initially, Lei showcased promise with a strong centre and superior piece activity. However, a critical misstep around move 23 allowed Lagno to seize the initiative. Despite Lagno's ascendancy, precise play proved elusive, ultimately resulting in a balanced position and a draw.

The tournament resumed with an exhilarating day of action following a brief hiatus. Among the highlights was the esteemed presence of Andrea Bocelli, the renowned tenor and avid chess enthusiast. Bocelli, who reignited his passion for chess in the digital age after a hiatus of over 40 years, graced the event with his presence.
