FIDE Candidates Tournament: Gukesh Surges To The Top With Victory Over Vidit, Praggnanandhaa Jumps To Third; Player Standings After Round 8

By MyKhel Staff

The FIDE Candidates Tournament resumed its gripping action on April 13 after a brief rest day, bringing forth intense battles and dramatic turnarounds. Amongst the riveting clashes, Indian players showcased their prowess, leaving a notable mark on the tournament's landscape.

In the open category, teenage Indian prodigy Gukesh D emerged victorious against compatriot Vidit Santosh Gujrathi, displaying tactical brilliance and seizing the joint lead in the tournament. Gukesh's strategic manoeuvres and sharp calculations propelled him to victory, reinstating his position at the tournament's summit alongside Nepomniachtchi.

"Coming back into the joint lead feels good, but I am just happy that I played a good game," said Gukesh. "I was not expecting this game to go so well."

Gukesh's close friend, R Praggnanandhaa's steady performance against Alireza Firouzja secured a crucial draw, positioning him neck-and-neck with Nakamura in third place.

However, the day's most compelling encounter unfolded between two American stalwarts, Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana. Nakamura's strategic finesse and Caruana's uncharacteristic lapses culminated in a stunning victory for Nakamura, catapulting him to prominence in the tournament's standings.

Nakamura expressed a sense that Fabiano might have felt the pressure, given the possibility of Nepo securing a win and leading with a significant margin. Nakamura highlighted a pivotal moment in the game when Fabiano appeared to underestimate the move 25. Re3. Nakamura observed a subtle indication in Fabiano's reaction, reminiscent of a tell in poker, suggesting that Fabiano had overlooked this critical move.

In women's chess, the clash between compatriots Tan Zhongyi and Lei Tingjie took centre stage. Lei avenged her earlier defeat by triumphing over Tan in a strategically rich encounter. Tan's decision to deviate from a move repetition proved costly as Lei capitalised on the opportunity, leading to a decisive victory and a three-way tie for the lead alongside Goryachkina.

Meanwhile, Indian grandmaster Humpy Koneru secured her first victory against Vaishali, albeit with mixed emotions. Koneru acknowledged Vaishali's commendable resilience but ultimately capitalised on critical errors to clinch the win.

"I started making all the mistakes once I got a good position," said Koneru. "Black was going completely fine and my extra exchange did not matter. At one point, I even started liking my opponent's position."

As the tournament progresses, Indian players continue to showcase their mettle on the global stage, captivating audiences with their tenacity and skill. With each move, they inch closer to glory, reaffirming India's stature as a powerhouse in the world of chess.

The next round promises further excitement and intrigue as players vie for supremacy in one of chess's most prestigious events. Indian fans eagerly anticipate the continued success of their chess prodigies as they navigate the challenges that lie ahead.

Stay tuned for more thrilling updates from the FIDE Candidates Tournament as the battle for supremacy unfolds on the chequered battlefield.
