England assemble a famous 1-0 win over Slovenia

Port Elizabeth: England have booked their place in the last 16 with a thrilling 1-0 victory against Slovenia at Port Elizabeth.

Coming into the match England had two disappointing matches with draw against Algeria and USA, but Jerman Defoe's first-half volley helped them sail past Slovenia to make it to the last 16 ending in second place in the group.

Capello's men looked much more like themselves and managed to bring smiles to English fans and media who had much criticism for the English side until the start of the match.

England got their much needed goal in the 23rd minute. James Milner swung in a ball from the right and Defoe got there ahead of Marko Suler to fire in a volley that found the back of the net to give them the lead. After the goal the England side seemed to play with much confidence and one more golden opportunity in the first half after Rooney laid a back pass in the Slovenia penalty box to Gerard for him to make a shot, but his shot was brilliantly denied by Samir Handanovic.

Even in the second half England were the dominant side with more shots than Slovenia. Rooney's effort in the 58th minute was tipped by Handanovic onto the post and deny the second goal. However, Slovenia did manage to keep the heart pounding for many English fans as they marched forward, Novakovic and substitute

Zlatko Dedic both got in shots but were denied by Terry and Glen Johnson who were terrific all night. They were defending their hearts out, putting their bodies on the line and managed to deny the equalizer.

It was a heartbreak for Slovenia camp as USA's late winner up in Pretoria meant they were out of the competition.
