Germany, Uruguay to battle for the third place

Posted By: Samyuktha

Port Elizabeth, Jul 10: In the fight for the third place in FIFA World Cup 2010, Germany and Uruguay are set to go head-on. While the young German blitzkrieg was slowed down and demolished by the fiery Spaniards, the true dark horses of FIFA World Cup 2010 Netherlands took down Uruguay in the semi-final ties.

The odds seem to be lining up for the Germans. Besides the psychic Octopus Paul's prediction, Germans have a spotless record against Uruguay. On the field, Tomas Muller, the 20-year-old star striker who was kept away from the semi-finals, is set to return for the German team, while Uruguay may be suffering the absence of Diego Forlan.

Absence of Muller and Germany's subsequent fall against Spain has been a topic of debate. Muller, who the Argentine coach Diego Maradona thought was a ball boy in the beginning of the tournament, has quickly emerged as a brilliant performer. For instance, he took Germany on an emphatic lead against Argentina in the quarter finals with a 3rd minute goal, the fastest goal of the tournament.

However, there is some disappointing news for the Germans, Miroslav Klose is reportedly nursing a back injury. The striker who is one goal from matching the World Cup record of 15 goals held by Ronaldo of Brazil is likely to miss the game.

And a great boost for Uruguay will be the return of Luis Suarez, who was suspended after getting a red card against Ghana for using his hands to prevent a late goal. But without Forlan, Suarez will be left alone to led the attack against Germany.

While the Germans, who have performed outrageously brilliant, would look out to make use of this opportunity to wrap up the FIFA World Cup 2010 with at least the third place, Uruguay advanced further than any other South America team have a whole continent to please.

Players to watch:

Germany: Thomas Mueller, Mesut Ozil, Bastian Schweinsteiger

Uruguay: Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani
