S Korea pulls draw against Nigeria, advances

By Samyuktha

Johanesburg, Jun 23: For the first time in FIFA World Cup history, South Korea sailed into the last 16 on foreign soil. The Asians pulled off a 2-2 draw against Nigeria on Tuesday, Jun 22 to book a spot for themselves in the knock-out stage of the 19th FIFA World Cup.

The Group B clash took place in Durban, where South Korea scripted history by breaking the record set in 2002 World Cup during which they entered the top four on home territory.

South Korea had pocketed three points defeating Greece 2-0. They, however, failed to beat the fiery Argentinians and were defeated 4-1.

By just securing a draw in the final group match, the Koreans easily sailed into the last 16 round.

The Africans took the early lead in the 12th minute when Kalu Uche converted a goal. Lee Jung Soo levelled the scores in the 38th minute.

Koreans quickly took the lead when ace striker Park Chu Young landed the ball in the net in 49th minute. The Super Eagles refused to give in and the golden oppurtunity came knocking in the 69th minute in the form of a penalty which Yakubu Ayegbeni converted gladly to tie the scores.

The Taeguk Warriors will next go head-on against Group A winners Uruguay, while Argentina, the other team that advanced from the group, will be clashing against Group A's Mexico.
