Uruguay edge past Mexico: finish on top

Rustenburg: Uruguay got the better of Mexico with their 1-0 against them in their Group A clash at Rustenburg and most importantly made it to the last-16 of the World Cup for the first time in 20 years.

Luis Suarez headed home from close range minutes before the end of first half to make it 1-0 for Uruguay. Edinson Cavani found a looping cross in the far post where Saurez found the netting.

Both the teams headed for the match equal on points, knowing that a draw would see them through to the next round. But the teams for fighting for the top spot as the teams wanted to avoid Argentina in the knockout stages.

Mexico forward Cuauhtemoc Blanco starting for the first time in place of the injured Carlos Vela. As the match started Uruguay got off to a good start with Luis Suarez getting a golden chance within the first five minutes. After a defensive error Hector Moreno, Suarez got space to lay his shot but his shot was wide of the left post. Forlan was continuing with his fine form with his good incisive passes and crosses.

However, Mexico were not giving up and did fight back in the midway through the first half. Andres Guardado hit a thunderous shot from outside the penalty box only to be denied by the crossbar. Guardado and Giovani dos Santos were playing well together, putting some good passes, however they were unable to find that final breakthrough the Uruguay defense.

Just as it was looking like the first half is going to end goalless, Suarez scored the goal and put the Uruguay team ahead at the conclusion of the first half.

Coming into the second half, Mexico with one goal down could not afford to concede more goals as the bafana bafana in the other match were 2-0 up against France. But the Uruguay team had other ideas and they were pushing for their second goal as Diego Lugano headed a ball from point-blank range only to be denied by a brilliant save by Mexican goalkeepr Oscar Perez. It was once again Forlan who drove a brilliant ball in from a free-kick to come up with that effort.

Mexico held more possession than Uruguay in the second half and were constantly looking for the equalizer, but they were never able to get the breakthrough as Uruguay defense held on till the end of second half, plus added time.

Uruguay incidentally completed three clean-sheets continuously for the first time in their World Cup history.
