Fit India Movement Gets Endurance Sports Boost As IRONMAN Group, Yoska Plan Nationwide Expansion
The IRONMAN Group and Yoska are set to collaborate with the Government of India to strengthen the Fit India Movement by expanding the country's endurance sporting events and encouraging greater public participation in physical activity.
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019, the Fit India Movement aims to make fitness, sports and healthy eating an integral part of everyday life. The proposed collaboration seeks to advance this vision by creating more opportunities for people, particularly young Indians, to participate in endurance sports.

The partnership will focus on building healthier communities, increasing grassroots engagement in sporting activities, positioning India as a destination for international-standard sporting events and accelerating the development of endurance disciplines.
Representatives from The IRONMAN Group and Yoska recently met Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya as discussions progressed towards a detailed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sports Department under the Government of India.
The proposed agreement will look to facilitate the expansion of IRONMAN, IRONMAN 70.3 and UTMB trail running competitions across several Indian states, helping create a wider national platform for endurance sports.
The IRONMAN Group, recognised as the world's largest operator of participation-based sporting events, organises hundreds of competitions in more than 50 countries. Its portfolio covers triathlons, trail running, road races, mountain biking and other multisport disciplines. The organisation's journey began with the inaugural IRONMAN event in Hawaii in 1978, and millions of athletes have since participated in its competitions worldwide.
India's endurance sports ecosystem has witnessed considerable expansion since the introduction of IRONMAN 70.3 in the country in 2019, when approximately 1,000 athletes participated. The sixth edition of IRONMAN 70.3 Goa is expected to attract more than 2,000 competitors, representing a twofold increase from its inaugural edition.
The competition calendar is also set to expand with the introduction of IRONMAN 70.3 Amdavad in 2027. Further IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 races, alongside UTMB World Series trail running competitions, are also being developed for India.
The growing popularity of endurance sports is reflected in international participation figures. The number of Indian athletes competing in IRONMAN triathlons worldwide has more than doubled since 2018, while participation in IRONMAN 70.3 events has increased almost sevenfold. Indian representation at UTMB World Series competitions has also recorded encouraging early growth.
Michelle Pepper, Managing Director of The IRONMAN Group Asia-Pacific, highlighted India's growing importance to the organisation and expressed optimism about the proposed collaboration.
"India has been one of the most encouraging stories for The IRONMAN Group. We began with around 1,000 athletes at the first IRONMAN 70.3 Goa, and the sixth edition will welcome over 2,000 competitors. That growth shows the passion of this community, and we love being able to share how endurance sport can inspire more people to lead active lives. We are proud to work with Yoska in support of the Fit India Movement and look forward to building a lasting partnership."
Deepak Raj, CEO and Founder of Yoska, also emphasised the potential of the partnership to bring endurance sports to a larger audience across the country.
"IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon began in India in 2019 with about 1,000 participants, this weekend the sixth edition in Goa will have double that, and we are excited to add IRONMAN 70.3 Amdavad next year. The Fit India Movement is about getting more people to take that first step towards an active life, and we want to play our part. Working with The IRONMAN Group on a detailed MoU is an important step towards making endurance sport more accessible across the country."
