Segundo Volante is one of the most exciting player roles in Football Manager 2024. As they say, it is one of the most overpowered or 'OP’ roles in the game. A segundo volante is a defensive midfield role that is a lot different from every other defensive midfield role and can be a gamechanger.

The Segundo Volante literally means (as per Google Translate), “Second Steering Wheel” or “Second Balance”. It can only be used specifically if you play a double pivot and is most used in 4-2-3-1 dm and 3-4-2-1 and 3-4-1-2 formations.

A segundo volante starts in defensive midfield but enjoys great freedom of movement often finding himself in central midfield or even in attacking midfield positions. Typically used alongside an anchor or deep lying playmaker or defensive midfielder who holds his position, segundo volante is an attacking minded defensive midfielder who takes the game to the opposition.

Segundo volante is an incredibly demanding player roles which requires a bit of everything. They require to remain defensively aware because of the position they are playing in but they also need to burst forward on every opportunity to create chances or even score a few goals for the side. For this, they require excellent physical and mental attributes and decent technical attributes as well.

A segundo volante requires exceptional ball-carrying capabilities and for that you need a player with good dribbling, technique, balance and agility. Also their off the ball must be commedable as they are required to make late runs into the box and become a goalscoring threat as well. A good long shot taker and someone with decent finishing is also suited for this role.

A segundo volante is a combination of a Ball-Winning Midfielder and a Box-to-Box midfielder in Football Manager. He will need to be able to win balls and cover space on the midfield, while he will also need the skills to move forward as he attempts to provide the attacking players with a passing option in the opposition area.

A segundo volante can be assigned both support and attack duty and the player will perform a bit different in the two duties. Finishing and Long Shots are required as the attacking aspects of his game are the main priority. This will shift when you select a support role. Now he will be concentrating on winning the ball back and mark other players.

The biggest reason for using a segundo volante is because it offers the best of both worlds. A segundo volante contributes greatly while going forward while also providing the team with a solid defensive shape. If used right, they also usually come up with solid number of goals and assists while also being one of the busiest players defensively.
