Rickie Fowler and Max Homa did not make it to the U.S. Open next week after losing a play-off to Cameron Young. The qualification events on Monday determined 47 spots for the third major of the year, set at Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh. The final spot at Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in Columbus was decided through a five-way play-off.
The play-off included Young, Fowler, Homa, Eric Cole, and Chase Johnson. Young secured his place with a 12-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole. This success came at the cost of Fowler, who was the runner-up in 2014, and Homa, a six-time PGA Tour winner. Homa had to carry his own bag for 38 holes after parting ways with his caddie.

Homa's streak of playing in 22 consecutive majors ended after missing The Open in 2019. Fowler also faced disappointment earlier this year when he missed The Masters, ending his run of seven straight major appearances. The U.S. Open is scheduled from Thursday, June 12 to Sunday, June 15.
The Columbus qualifier was notable for its star-studded line-up and large play-off. Ultimately, six players secured their spots at Oakmont: Erik Van Rooyen, Bud Cauley, Lanto Griffin, Justin Lower, Harrison Ott, and Cameron Young.
This year's U.S. Open qualification process highlighted intense competition among top golfers vying for limited spots. Despite their efforts, both Fowler and Homa fell short in securing a place at Oakmont this time around.
