By MyKhel Staff

"Practice makes perfect" is the guiding principle that Jammu and Kashmir's Ummer Ahmad Rather lives by. A native of Budgam, Ummer has been playing Kho Kho since he was in the sixth grade, and now, he is striving for a spot in the Indian men's team for the upcoming Kho Kho World Cup.

Despite facing challenges, including harsh weather conditions, Ummer remains dedicated to his rigorous training schedule.

"I am really looking forward to the World Cup," Ummer shared. "It's an incredible opportunity for all of us, and our goal is to bring home the gold for the country. It's an honor that India will host the World Cup, giving Kho Kho the global recognition it deserves. The participation of over 20 nations in this event is a source of immense pride for all of us."

Coming from a modest background, Ummer, like many others, faces financial struggles. However, his determination to represent India on the global stage keeps him motivated. "My father and I work as laborers. Despite the difficulties, my ultimate goal is to represent India at the World Cup, and that vision keeps me moving forward," he said.

Ummer expressed his gratitude to the Kho Kho Association of Jammu & Kashmir and the Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) for their support in helping players from the region pursue their professional aspirations. "I'm really thankful to the Kho Kho Association of Jammu & Kashmir and KKFI for providing us with the opportunity and the platform to play Kho Kho at a professional level. They've offered valuable guidance on fitness, nutrition, and overall well-being," he added.

Under the guidance of coach Bilal Ahmed Bhagat, Ummer is currently part of the training camp at JLN Stadium in New Delhi. He praised the initiative, calling it a valuable opportunity for players to enhance their skills. "The coaches here are excellent, and it's also great to train alongside players from different states. We exchange skills and learn from each other's experiences and cultures," he concluded.

India is set to host the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup from January 13-19, 2025, in New Delhi.
