From Twitter: Indians salute 'Supergirl' Sakshi Malik for Rio Olympics bronze

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 18: It was celebration time for India and its supporters as wrestler Sakshi Malik won a bronze medal at Rio Olympics on Wednesday (August 17).

Just before 3 AM IST (August 18), Sakshi scripted history by giving India the first medal at this year's Olympics. She also became the firt ever female wrestler to claim a medal for the country. (PM Modi congratulates Sakshi)

23-year-old Sakshi clinched bronze in Freestyle 58kg category. She defeated Kyrgysztan's Aisuluu Tynybekova in the bronze medal play-off match.

In the wee hours of Thursday (August 18), Indians were glued to their television sets and as soon as Sakshi won, they took to the micro-blogging website Twitter to congratulate and salute the "Supergirl". (Sehwag's best tribute for Sakshi)

"Meri 12 saal ki tapasya rang layi (It's the result of my 12 years' fight for day and night). Geeta didi, my senior had qualified for the first time in London," Sakshi said after the win.

"I never thought I would become the first woman wrestler from India to bag an Olympic medal in wrestling. I hope the remaining wrestlers will also do well," she said.
