Fulham's Sanchez looks to repeat of 1988

LONDON, May 4 (Reuters) Fulham caretaker manager Lawrie Sanchez has told his players that Premier League survival is in their own hands as they prepare to face Liverpool tomorrow.

Fulham sit precariously above the relegation zone and Sanchez is hoping his team emulate his achievements as a player by inflicting defeat on Liverpool.

Sanchez scored the winning goal in Wimbledon's historic victory over Liverpool in the 1988 FA Cup Final.

However, he admits he cannot inspire his side with talk of that victory 19 years ago because none of his players even knew he won the competition.

Speaking at a media conference today at their training ground he said: ''This is not about me versus Liverpool. In my past I have crossed paths with Liverpool plenty of times, but this match is about these Fulham players against a Liverpool side.

''I could talk to them about beating Liverpool but these players here don't even know I played in the 1988 FA Cup Final.

''This is a generation who cannot remember Liverpool even winning the league every year. They just remember Manchester United and Arsenal winning the Premiership.'' Sanchez refused to be drawn on any possible legal action by Fulham and other clubs over the West Ham Argentine players' ownership saga which landed the Hammers a record fine last week, but no points deduction.

He said: ''I was brought here to keep Fulham in the Premiership.

The big questions are for the people above me.

''If I do keep Fulham up by getting one or seven points then I will be happy. If I don't, then I will have failed.'' Reuters AKD DB2228
