Geojit to sponsor foreign coach for Chess GM Gopal G N

Mumbai, Feb 6 (UNI) Geojit, a leading retail stock broking firm, will sponsor the expenses of International Grand Master and coach Lev Psakhis for coaching 18-year-old Gopal G N, the first Grand Master (GM) in chess from Kerala and the 16th from India, in May this year.

Coach Psakhis has been coaching many leading GMs for the past 20 years. His trainees include the illustrious Gary Kasparov and the Polgar sisters.

Gopal is currently ranked eighth in India. His aim is to become Super Grand Master and then to break into the ELITE Club (the world top ten), a release issued here today stated.

Geojit Managing Director C J George said, ''Sponsoring Gopal is Geojit's effort to create an opportunity for Indians to play with higher ranked GMs and improve their rating.'' He added, ''We hope to give this game of intellect, the exposure necessary to ensure that the game gets its due place among Indian sports lovers.'' Speaking on the sponsorship, Gopal said, ''I am really pleased that Geojit is my sponsor, especially for the foreign coaching that I require. I am glad that Geojit will be my companion through this most important phase of my life.'' Gopal was sponsored by Geojit for participating in the FIDE World Cup in November 2007 in Siberia, Russia. Gopal's superb performance against Kasimdzhanov caused the latter to remark that Gopal would soon break into the ELITE Club. At the Asian Team Chess Championship at Vizag in early January 2008, Gopal helped his team secure the Silver Medal for India and a Gold Medal for his individual performance. As per the January FIDE ELO rating list, Gopal's rating is 2,528 which will become 2,559 in the FIDE April rating list, the release added.
