George Russell is hopeful about Mercedes' prospects in the upcoming Formula One season. The team revealed their new car on Monday, aiming to improve from last year's fourth-place finish in the constructors' championship. Mercedes dominated from 2014 to 2021 with eight consecutive titles but have only secured five Grand Prix wins in the past three years.
In 2024, Mercedes managed four race victories, two each for Russell and former teammate Lewis Hamilton. These were their first wins since 2022. Despite this success, inconsistency plagued them, resulting in a total of 468 points, placing them behind McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull in the standings.

This season marks Mercedes' first without Hamilton since 2012 as he moved to Ferrari. Eighteen-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli has taken his place alongside Russell, who is entering his fourth year with the team. Team principal Toto Wolff expressed enthusiasm for this new chapter.
"We open an exciting new era in the story of our team and Mercedes-AMG motorsport in 2025," Wolff stated. "We are building on the incredible legacy of our heritage, and we can't wait to go racing."
Russell acknowledged that each year since 2022 has presented new challenges. "Every year [since 2022] we have uncovered a problem, solved it, and it's created a new one," he said. He noted that they have been more disciplined with changes and simulator testing to avoid repeating mistakes.
Russell remains optimistic about the team's potential performance improvements. "If we bring the performance we expect, it should be a good step forward," he remarked. However, he cautioned that there are no guarantees but remains hopeful for a successful season.
In 2024, Mercedes trailed McLaren by 198 points as McLaren clinched their first championship since 1998. Russell believes McLaren remains strong contenders for the title this year. "Look at how dominant McLaren were," he said. "They are the favourites going into this year."
The final year of regulations often brings teams closer together competitively. Despite this natural convergence, Russell expects McLaren to remain at the forefront of competition.
The Formula One season kicks off with track action in Bahrain later this week. Testing will take place over three days from February 26-28 before the first Grand Prix of the season in Australia on March 16.
