Global Chess League Season 4: Magnus Carlsen Returns as Defending Champions in GCL

The fourth season of the Global Chess League (GCL) is set to bring together some of the biggest names in world chess, with world No.1 Magnus Carlsen returning to the competition after a one-year absence. The Tech Mahindra and FIDE-backed league will be held in India for the second successive year.

The nine-day tournament will feature six teams competing in a double round-robin format, with the top two sides progressing to the Grand Finale on September 13, 2026.

Carlsen will return to the Alpine APL Pipers, who are the defending champions. The Norwegian had represented the team during the first two editions in Dubai and London but missed last season in Mumbai, when the Pipers went on to lift the title.

Speaking about his return, Carlsen said: "I am a little bit surprised to be back, seeing as we had a couple of really frustrating years for the team - the first two years when I was playing. And then when I was away, the team won it all. So this time I'm just trying to do my best to not do any worse than last year."

The Pipers have further strengthened their squad with Divya Deshmukh, India's first Women's World Cup winner, joining experienced star Koneru Humpy. Anish Giri and Vidit Gujrathi will feature on the other men's boards.

The tournament also features an impressive group of icon players, including Carlsen, 2026 Candidates winner Javokhir Sindarov, Alireza Firouzja, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Viswanathan Anand and Ian Nepomniachtchi.

Two-time champions Triveni Continental Kings will once again be among the favourites. Firouzja will lead the team, with Wei Yi, Alexandra Kosteniuk and Zhu Jiner forming part of its established core.

Kosteniuk said the team is targeting a third championship, adding: "It is a good feeling that we have won this title twice before, but it will be even nicer to add a third one here. So that's what we are aiming for."

Meanwhile, Anand has switched from Ganges Grandmasters to PBG Alaskan Knights, where he will lead a youthful squad featuring Arjun Erigaisi, Abhimanyu Mishra and 15-year-old Turkish Grandmaster Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus.

The GCL is also introducing several innovations for Season 4. Fans will be able to follow individual boards and players through the league's digital platforms, while team coaches and captains will wear heart-rate monitors to track their stress levels during matches.

The opening day will see PBG Alaskan Knights face Fyers American Gambits, followed by Triveni Continental Kings vs Ganges Grandmasters and CheQ Mumba Masters vs Alpine APL Pipers.
