Chennai, Nov 10: The Chennai Grand Masters 2024 has taken an exciting turn as GM Aravindh Chithambaram delivered a stunning defeat to GM Arjun Erigaisi, marking his first loss in the tournament.
This pivotal match in Round 6 has set the stage for a gripping title race. Meanwhile, GM Vidit Gujrathi managed a draw against GM Levon Aronian, making the competition even more intense as both Arjun and Aronian now lead with four points each.

Aravindh, who had previously only drawn his matches, showcased his skill by capitalizing on a critical mistake made by Arjun in the 16th and 17th move. With a queen pawn opening, Aravindh took full advantage of Arjun's slip, gradually building pressure and ultimately securing victory in 48 moves. This win not only marks his first in the competition but also puts him just half a point behind the leaders, alongside GM Amin Tabatabaei.
In another closely watched match, Aronian had the opportunity to surpass Arjun in the standings. Despite having a time advantage against Vidit, the match concluded in a draw after a long 70-move battle, leaving just two kings on the board. This outcome keeps the race for the top spot fiercely competitive.
The tournament, held at the Anna Centenary Library in Chennai, is organized by MGD1 and backed by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. It runs from November 5 to 11, 2024, and consists of two divisions: Masters and Challengers. The Masters category, with an average rating of 2729, is particularly challenging this year, while the Challengers division offers a platform for emerging Indian talent.
In the Challengers category, GM Pranav V continues to lead after drawing his second consecutive match against GM M Pranesh, bringing his total to five points. Other matches also saw draws, including the encounter between GM Raunak Sadhwani and GM D Harika.
However, GM Abhimanyu Puranik found his way back to victory by defeating GM R Vaishali, and GM Leon Mendonca edged closer to the lead by overcoming GM Karthikeyan Murali.
The Chennai Grand Masters 2024 has not only provided a stage for intense competition among seasoned players but also highlighted the rising stars in Indian chess.
