Goa piles up 279 for 5 against Railway with Swapnil Asnodkar's ton

Margao, Nov 15 ( UNI) Powered by a magnificent unbeaten 125 by opener Swapnil Asnodkar and his 153-run partnership for the third wicket with captain J Arun Kumar (77), Goa amassed 279 for five wickets in 91 overs against Railways at the close of play on the first day of the four-day Ranji Plate ''B'' cricket match being played at MCC ground here today.

At the close of play, Asnodkar not out on 125 and Shadab Jakati not out on 16 were at the crease.

After winning the toss, Goa elected to bat but made a bad start by losing two early wickets -- that of opener Rohit Asnodkar (2) and Sahil Dhuri( 6) -- with a score of 25 for two on the board.

Skipper J Arun Kumar joined Swapnil Asnodkar and the duo took control of the situation and negotiated the Railways bowling attack with ease and elegance raising their total to 178 for three before captain Arun Kumar was caught by Siddarth Joshi off the bowling of Madan Yadav. His gritty 77 was laced with ten fours and a six which came off 141 balls and in 164 minutes. After the captain's exit, Goa lost another two wickets of Manoj Joglekar (9) and Ajay Ratra (27) with the score reading 247 for five.

Asnodkar, who led the charge for Goa was scoring freely right from the beginning and no bowlers made any impression on him. He was in no trouble at all during his unbeaten knock of 125 as he displayed a wide range of strokes on both sides of the wicket to notch up his century in 199 balls. His unbeaten 125 included 15 fours and came off 245 balls and in 360 minutes.

Left arm spinner Madan Yadav claimed two wickets conceding 67 runs, while Mushavir Khote, Harvinder Singh and Karan Sharma took one wicket each for Railways.
