Goa to institute spl award in name of Dilip Sardesai

Panaji, Aug 8 (UNI) Goa government has proposed to institute a special award in the name of late cricketer Dilip Sardessai.

The award called 'Dilip Sardesai Sports Excellence Award' will be presented to the highest achiever among Goan sportsmen who represent the State at any recognised international-level sports competition, said Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat today, which incidentally is the birth anniversary of late Mr Dilip Sardesai.

The 'Dilip Sardesai Sports Excellence Award' will be presented anually on August 15 from next year onwards.

Mr Kamat said the award has been instituted as a tribute to cricket legend Dilip Sardesai to inspire upcoming sportspersons in attaining great heights at the international level.

The award comprises of a bronze plaque of late Mr Dilip Sardesai, a citation and cash prize of Rs one lakh.

The requisite details of the scheme and awards are in the finalisation stage.

Meanwhile, Mr Kamat also gave financial assistance of Rs one lakh by Sports Authority of Goa to upcoming cricketer from Goa Saurav Bandekar.

Saurav Bandekar has representd India in the under-19 Afro Asia cricket tournament held at Vishkhapatnam in 2005. He was the higest wicket-taker in the tournament. He had also participated in the India-Pakistan Under-19 series where india emerged victorious in all the six one-dayers. Saurav is a regular memeber of Goa Ranji team since 2005-06 and has so far claimed 10 wickets in four matches.
