Gobert Stifles Jokic After DPOTY Snub In Timberwolves Victory

Rudy Gobert answered recent criticism on court, anchoring a 119-114 Minnesota Timberwolves win over the Denver Nuggets by holding Nikola Jokic to 1-of-8 shooting on direct matchups, as the three-time MVP still posted 24 points and 15 rebounds but struggled badly whenever the Minnesota centre was the primary defender.

Jokic’s 1-of-8 return against Gobert marked the worst playoff shooting display of Jokic’s career against a single defender, with at least six attempts, underlining how the 33-year-old controlled key possessions even though Jokic filled the box score, while the performance arrived days after Gobert felt slighted by the Defensive Player of the Year voting.

Gobert made clear that the award result hurt but suggested such reactions were familiar, saying: "I was lucky. A top three defender cannot do that. So I was lucky. Not the first time I've gotten disrespected. Probably not the last. If you want to disrespect greatness, take it for granted, whatever, soon they'll realise the impact."

Jokic had started quietly before coming alive in the third quarter, forcing adjustments from Minnesota, yet Anthony Edwards revealed that the Timberwolves chose trust over extra help in the final period, recalling a huddle message to Gobert when Denver led and Jokic threatened to take control of Game 2.

Edwards, who finished with 30 points to lead Minnesota’s offence, detailed the instructions that kept the scheme simple and left responsibility with Gobert, saying: "I told him we ain't bringing no double team. You're gonna guard [Jokic] one-on-one. Stop fouling. Stop going for the reach-in. Because he's going to flop. They're going to call the foul. Play him straight up. We're half the team when [Gobert's]on the bench. They don't understand what he means to us when he's on the floor. People don't want to lay the ball up around him. They don't want to go at Rudy."

Edwards’ comments reflected how Minnesota view Gobert’s presence, with the interior defence shaping Denver’s shot choices even when Jokic scored, while elsewhere in the playoffs CJ McCollum hit 34 points for the Atlanta Hawks in a narrow 107-106 Game 2 victory over the New York Knicks, and three Cleveland Cavaliers starters combined to punish the Toronto Raptors.

Game Team 1 Score Team 2 Score Key performers
Game 2 Minnesota Timberwolves 119 Denver Nuggets 114 Rudy Gobert, Nikola Jokic, Anthony Edwards
Game 2 Atlanta Hawks 107 New York Knicks 106 CJ McCollum (34 points)
Game 2 Cleveland Cavaliers 115 Toronto Raptors 105 Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley (83 combined points)

For Gobert, the display against Jokic backed up Minnesota’s faith and added another chapter to a long-running debate over individual awards and defensive value, while results in Atlanta and Cleveland kept multiple series finely balanced as teams adjusted game plans and rotations across a demanding playoff schedule.
