Golf-Americans Strange and Green voted on to Hall of Fame

By Staff

MIAMI, Apr 18 (Reuters) Former major champions Curtis Strange and Hubert Green have been voted on to the World Golf Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2007, officials said in Savannah, Georgia, today.

The two Americans will be inducted on November 12 at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Florida.

Former U.S. Ryder Cup captain Strange, whose career tally of 17 PGA Tour titles included the U.S. Open in 1988 and 1989, was elected on the PGA Tour ballot.

Green, winner of the 1977 U.S. Open and 1985 PGA Championship and also four titles on the seniors Champions Tour, was chosen in the veterans' category by the World Golf Foundation (WGF) board of directors selection committee.

''It's a tremendous honour to be elected into the World Golf Hall of Fame,'' Strange, 52, said in a statement. ''It is a very exciting time for my family and me, and also those who've been supportive over the years.'' Green, who triumphed 19 times on the PGA Tour in a 26-year career, said: ''On my golfing journey, I had no idea how high I could climb.

''To be inducted into the Hall of Fame is reaching the summit, being a member of the club that hosts the greats of the game,'' added the 60-year-old.

Any player who has been on the PGA Tour or the International ballot for 10 years is eligible for the veterans' category.

WORTHY PLAYERS ''It is truly fitting that the Hall of Fame will be adding such distinguished and deserving players to its membership this fall,'' PGA Tour commissioner and WGF chairman Tim Finchem said at the Savannah Harbor Resort and Spa.

''Hubert's two major championships were the benchmarks of a stellar professional career that included many other titles. And Curtis' career will long be defined by his back-to-back U.S.

Opens and his many PGA Tour victories.'' Further announcements are expected for the 2007 class of inductees later this year.

South Korea's Pak Se Ri will qualify when she celebrates a decade on the LPGA Tour by competing in her 10th event this season.

Pak, who won her third LPGA Championship at Bulle Rock in Maryland last year, has achieved all the other LPGA points requirements for induction.

The World Golf Hall of Fame's voting body comprises Hall of Fame members, golf writers and historians, the WGF board of directors and members of the Hall of Fame's advisory board.
