Greenwood downs BKSP to lift Subroto Cup

By Staff

New Delhi, Sep 24 (UNI) Greenwood School (Nagaland) gave a superb display of attacking football to defeat BKSP (Bangladesh) 2-0 and claim the Subroto Cup 2008.

Greenwood thus made amends for last year when they had lost to SAI, Lucknow in the final.

Both teams displayed exemplerary technique and played a fast, aggresive game.

The Nagas were on the offensive right from the start and surged ahead in the second minute when Lunminlal - who was later adjudged the best player of the tournament - punched in a beautiful free-kick from the edge of the penalty box.

Buoyed by the early lead, Greenwood built up pressure on the Bangladesh goal. They almost grabbed their second goal a few minutes later but Nyuhenlo failed to capitalise on a long ball from the midfield which was fisted out by BKSP goalkeeper Rafi Rehman.

Lunminlal's header off the resultant corner was inches wide of the far post.

Nyuhenlo was in the thick of things again when his cross found Wasadphung on the right whose acrobatic shot on the run hit the crossbar.

The Nagaland team was making good, composed build-ups with short passes, forcing their rivals to fall back and defend in numbers.

The sustained presure paid off when Nyuhenlo (19th min) doubled the lead with a brilliant free-kick from 30 yards. The ball swerved in the air and went in the far post.

BKSP gradually recovered from the shock of their early setbacks and started making regular forays into the rival box.

They missed a great chance to reduce the margin just at the stroke of half-time. A defensive error found BKSP striker Salman Shah in possesion of the ball just outside the box. But Salman shot over the bar with Greenwood goalkeeper Pusu Temjey at his mercy.

The Bangladesh team were a much improved outfit after the break but the Nagas continued to dominate the proceedings.

In the 55th minute, BKSP was awarded an indirect freekick after a quick counter-attack when Saddam Hossain was fouled inside the Greenwood box. But Shagor Hossain's shot was easily dealt with by Temjay under the Greenwood bar.

But the best chance for the Bangladeshis was produced by Joynal Abedin whose freekick from near the centre line hit the crossbar with the goalkeeper completely beaten.

The Nagaland team almost got a third goal just seconds before final whistle when an accurate free-kick by Tia Toshi found Tingnyek inside the rival box. Tingnyek, however, failed to beat the goalkeeper from close range.
