Gregg Popovich Likely Won’t Return to Coach the Spurs This Season, Future in NBA Uncertain

By Tanisha Chhabra

Gregg Popovich is not expected to return as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs this season, and his future in the NBA remains uncertain as he continues recovering from a stroke suffered in November, according to reports. The 76-year-old, who holds the record for most wins in NBA history, has been away from the team since the incident and is focused on rehabilitation.

Popovich’s absence has been a significant challenge for the Spurs, who have struggled through a tough season. Assistant coach Mitch Johnson has stepped in as interim head coach, leading the team to a 24-30 record so far. Despite early expectations of a full recovery, recent updates indicate that Popovich will not return to the bench this season, raising questions about whether he will resume his coaching career.

Throughout his recovery, Popovich has remained engaged with the team, offering guidance and staying in contact with players and staff. He has been actively involved in strategy discussions and mentoring his young roster, including star player Victor Wembanyama. The 21-year-old French prospect, who was recently sidelined for the season with a shoulder injury, has reportedly been in close communication with Popovich, who continues to provide support.

Popovich’s impact on the Spurs and the NBA as a whole is undeniable. Since taking over as head coach in 1996, he has led San Antonio to five NBA championships and developed a reputation as one of the greatest coaches in basketball history. In addition to his NBA success, he also guided Team USA to a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

While the Spurs initially hoped for his return this season, the organization now faces the possibility of moving forward without their longtime leader. Team executives and coaching staff have emphasized their commitment to supporting Popovich’s recovery, acknowledging his importance to the franchise.

As he continues rehabilitation, the Spurs and the NBA community remain uncertain about his future. Whether he chooses to return or step away permanently, his legacy in basketball is firmly established.
