Gukesh D beats Ding Liren to become the youngest FIDE World Chess Champion

Gukesh D scripted history on Thursday, 12th December, 2024 by becoming the youngest chess player ever at the age of 18 to clinch the FIDE World Chess Championship title, defeating China's Ding Liren at the summit clash.

The teenager was overcome with emotion after becoming champion. The prodigy shattered the long-standing record set by Garry Kasparov. Kasparov had claimed the championship at the age of 22 by defeating Anatoly Karpov in 1985.

As the grand finale appeared destined for a tie-breaker set to take place on December 13, fortune favored Gukesh when defending champion Ding, under pressure, committed a critical error that turned the match decisively in the Indian's favor.

The 18-year-old demonstrated unwavering resilience, relentlessly challenging Ding in the complex rook-and-bishop endgame. Refusing to let either himself or his opponent settle, Gukesh maintained relentless pressure throughout.

The defending champion faced immense strain as Gukesh's precise play gradually eroded Ding's composure, forcing him into a race against the clock. With less than 10 minutes remaining, the Chinese Grandmaster found himself scrambling under mounting pressure, while Gukesh remained composed with over an hour to his advantage.

Gukesh's determination ultimately bore fruit when Ding, battling the ticking clock, made a costly mistake. Seizing the opportunity, Gukesh capitalized to secure a momentous and historic victory. The Indian chess player went onto clinch the title in 14 games with a scoreline of 7.5-6.5.

"I've been dreaming about this and living this moment since I was 6 or 7. Every chess player wants to live this moment - and to be one of them is .... I'm living my dream. I'd like to thank God - this whole journey - from Candidates till here could only be possible by God," Gukesh reflected on the monumental win after the thrilling encounter.

"It took me a while to realised I blundered. I think I played my best tournament in the year. I could be better, but considering yesterday's luck, it's a fair result to lose in the end. I have no regrets. Thank you. I will continue to play'', Ding opened up on the loss.
