Gukesh D Climbs Up To 3rd Spot In Live Chess Ratings, Inches Closer To 2800-Mark

By MyKhel Staff

Indian Grandmaster Gukesh D has made a remarkable leap in the live chess ratings, securing the World No. 3 position.

The 18-year-old achieved this feat after an unbeaten run in the ongoing Tata Steel Chess 2025, where his latest result was a draw against defending champion Wei Yi of China.

This performance allowed him to surpass Fabiano Caruana, who suffered a defeat against Indian prodigy R Praggnanandhaa.

After 11 completed rounds at the Tata Steel Chess tournament in the Netherlands, the current World Chess Champion, Gukesh has gained 16 rating points, reaching a live rating of 2793.2. This is just a point shy of his personal best of 2794, set in October 2024. Meanwhile, Arjun Erigaisi has slipped to sixth place, losing 33 points due to a winless streak in the tournament, leaving him with 2767.5 points.

Despite these live ratings, the official FIDE rankings still place Gukesh fifth globally with an Elo rating of 2777, while Arjun remains fourth at 2801. Magnus Carlsen continues to dominate as World No. 1 with a rating of 2833, followed by Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura.

Gukesh Leads the Tata Steel Chess 2025 Masters Section

As on Feb 1, Gukesh tops the Masters section with 8 points, maintaining a 0.5-point lead over R Praggnanandhaa and Nodirbek Abdusattorov, who are tied for second place. Arjun Erigaisi, however, finds himself in 13th place out of 14 participants with just 3.5 points.

He has displayed exceptional form with five wins and six draws from 11 games. This tournament marks his first competitive appearance since clinching the 2024 World Chess Championship title, where he triumphed over Ding Liren with a score of 7.5-6.5.

Cut to 2nd Feb, Gukesh faced a major blow to his Tata Steel Masters campaign as he was held to a draw by GM Jorden van Foreest after a tense, complex endgame dominated by heavy pieces.

Meanwhile, R Praggnanandhaa secured a crucial victory over Alexey Sarana, propelling himself to the top of the leaderboard alongside Gukesh.

In another key match, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, who had been tied with Praggnanandhaa in points, suffered a defeat at the hands of Arjun Erigaisi. This win marked Arjun's first triumph in the tournament, boosting his standings.
