D Gukesh, an 18-year-old chess prodigy from Chennai, has become the youngest-ever World Chess Champion after defeating reigning champion Ding Liren in Singapore. His journey from a seven-year-old talent to a global sensation is a testament to his exceptional skill and determination.
Born on May 29, 2006, into a family of academics, Gukesh's father, Dr. Rajinikanth, an ENT surgeon, and mother, Padma, a microbiologist, made significant sacrifices to support his aspirations.

Dr. Rajinikanth even took a break from his career to accompany Gukesh to tournaments, while Padma became the family's sole breadwinner. Gukesh began playing chess at seven under the guidance of coach Bhaskar V at Velammal School.
At just 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days, he became the youngest Indian Grandmaster and the third-youngest globally. He continued breaking barriers, becoming the youngest to achieve a FIDE rating of 2750 and the youngest winner of the Candidates Tournament.
Gukesh's meteoric rise is attributed to unwavering parental support and mentorship from Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand. As part of the WestBridge Anand Chess Academy, Gukesh honed his strategies and mental toughness under Anand's guidance.
The chess world first noticed Gukesh's brilliance during the 2022 Chess Olympiad, where he scored an impeccable 8/8, leading India to victory against top-seeded teams. This success foreshadowed his crowning achievement in 2024.
He then surpassed Anand to become India's No. 1 chess player. Despite financial challenges early on, Gukesh's family relied on prize money and crowdfunding to support his tournaments. Their sacrifices have now culminated in Gukesh achieving the ultimate glory.
