Gumulya lifts women's Singles title

Pune, Nov 17 (UNI) Second seeded Sandy Gumulya of Indonesia today ended the splendid run of India's eighth seeded Isha Lakhani to lift the women's singles title in the 25,000 dolars NECC ITF women's tennis championships at the Deccan Gymkhana tennis courts.

Gumulya, ranked 265 in the world, played fluently to record a 6-3, 7-5 straight win over Isha Lakhani in a 1 hour 36 minutes tussle to take home 25 valuable WTA points and winners cheque of 2940 dollars.

The wily Indonesian proved to be consistent for Lakhani returning every ball, Gumulya broke Lakhani in the 6th game of the first set and then held on her serve to win the first set 6-3 in 47 minutes.

Lakhani played the second set to her potential mixing the ball well on both the flanks but faltered on her serve in the 11 game to give Gumulya 6-5 lead. The 12th game was the most exciting of the match with Lakhani saving more than 4 match points, but Gumulya hit a ace and Isha's forehand went just wide to give the Indonesian her first 25000 dollars win.

Speaking after the match, Gumulya--flanked by former Indonesian top player Yayuk Basuki--said she was playing well and was ready to participate for her country at the South East Asian Games (SEA) to be held at Bangkok in two weeks. Gumulya progressed very well reaching the quarterfinals, semifinals, finals and now the title, ''I'm confident of playing in the WTA Tour events from January'', she added.

For Lakhani, it was another disappointment in the finals of the 25000 dollars event as she lost for the second time, she had finished runners-up to Akgul Ammanmuradova at Mumbai a few years back. She had to be content with 17 WTA points and 1666 dollars. The Principal secretary Sports and Youth Affairs Government of Maharashtra Sharvari Gokhale gave away the gift cheques and trophy to the winner.

Following are the results (Finals) (2) Sandy Gumulya (Ind) bt (8) Isha Lakhani (Ind) 6-3, 7-5.
