Olympics: Gutta-Ponnappa can still enter quarter-final

By Sreekumar
London, Aug 1: With 2 Chinese, 4 South Korean and 2 Indonesian shuttlers being disqualified today for throwing matches at the London Olympics, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa may well be included in the revamped quarter-final lineup here.

The Indian duo won two of their three matches in the group but missed out on quarter-finals by just one point after Japanese pair of Mizuki Fujii and Reika Kakiiwa also finished with two wins in the group. The Japanese combination went through in the second spot from Group B. Now that the aforementioned four pairs have been expelled, one half of the draw has to be filled.

This means that Jwala and Ashwini can still hope to continue in the tournament. Earlier the Indian team had alleged that the round robin fixture involving Japan and Chinese Taipei was also fixed.

According to Jwala, the Japanese pair of Fujii and Kakiiwa deliberately lost to Cheng Wen Hsing and Chien Yu Chen. It is notable that the Chinese Taipei shuttlers are ranked five places below their opponents.

Though the Indian appeal to disqualify Fujii and Kakiiwa was turned down, latest reports say that India has again appealed for a fresh draw so that Jwala and Ashwini get another chance.

Since Indonesia and South Korea have also appealed against the disqualification of their players, the Indian duo will have to wait for the final verdict.
