Haliburton Competes Despite Injury In Pacers' Game 5 Loss To Thunder

Tyrese Haliburton played through a calf injury during the Pacers' Game 5 defeat to the Thunder. Despite limited scoring, he contributed with assists and rebounds as Indiana faces elimination in the NBA Finals.

Tyrese Haliburton played through discomfort during the Indiana Pacers' Game 5 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Despite a sore right calf, he continued playing after leaving for treatment early in the game. Returning with his calf wrapped, Haliburton's performance was limited, scoring only four points and failing to make a field goal for the first time in his playoff career.

Haliburton acknowledged his injury was in the same area as before. He expressed his commitment to playing, saying, "It's the Finals. I've worked my whole life to be here and I want to be out there to compete, help my teammates any way I can. I was not great tonight by any means, but it's not really a thought of mine to not play here. If I can walk, then I want to play."

Haliburton Plays Through Injury in Game 5

Despite his struggles, Haliburton contributed six assists and seven rebounds over 34 minutes on the court. His six drives were the fewest this postseason and tied for second fewest in his playoff career. The Pacers now face an uphill battle against history, as teams winning Game 5 when tied 2-2 have a 74% success rate in clinching the series.

Pacers coach Rick Carlisle noted Haliburton wasn't fully fit but didn't expect him to miss games with their season at stake. "He's not a hundred percent," Carlisle said. "There's a lot of guys in the series that aren't. This is a lifetime opportunity." He added that they would evaluate Haliburton's condition closely.

Indiana's reliance on Haliburton's scoring is evident; they are 6-7 when he scores 20 or fewer points this postseason and undefeated when he scores more than 20. The Game 5 loss marked their first consecutive defeats this postseason, ending a streak since March.

Haliburton admitted that his team must dig deep for Game 6 in Indianapolis on Thursday. "We've had our backs against the wall many different times over the last two years and had to find different ways to win," he stated. "The way that this year has gone, nobody said this was going to be sweet."

He emphasized readiness for Game 6 against a tough opponent: "It's kind of poetic that we're here. We've got to be ready to go for Game 6. Our backs are against the wall. It's a really tough team." He stressed collective improvement: "Everybody has to be prepared. It starts with me, and we've all got to be better."

The Pacers' challenge is significant given their dependence on Haliburton's scoring ability. They need him at full strength if they hope to upset the Thunder and extend their season beyond Game 6.
