Lewis Hamilton experienced significant frustration following his early exit from the Belgian Grand Prix sprint qualifying. The seven-time world champion will begin Saturday's sprint race at Spa from 18th position after spinning off during his final lap in the first qualifying stage. Earlier, Hamilton expressed his ambition to help Ferrari secure their first constructors' championship since 2008, but his optimism waned after the session.
"I spun. The first time I think in my career [due to a rear lock]," Hamilton told Sky Sports. "[The car was] Not great. There's not really a lot to say. Tomorrow's a new day, obviously I'm massively frustrated. A lot of work has gone in, and to be there is not really great, so hopefully tomorrow will be better."
George Russell, Hamilton's former teammate at Mercedes, also faced difficulties, finishing 13th. Despite going fifth-fastest initially, Russell suspected damage to his car after Kimi Antonelli brought gravel onto the track following a spin. Russell remarked on the situation: "We've had the pace all day. In Q1 I ran over all of that gravel when Kimi went off."Russell continued by explaining how the incident affected his performance: "For the rest of that lap, it felt terrible, the lap after it felt terrible, and then my SQ2 lap felt terrible. We saw some damage on the car." He expressed hope for improvement: "Our attention now turns to tomorrow. We will hopefully be able to show more of the pace that we saw in FP1."Kimi Antonelli also encountered challenges during sprint qualifying. He shared his experience: "It was a shame to have our sprint qualifying session go the way it did." Antonelli noted that while the car performed well initially, a mistake led to issues: "Unfortunately, I got a little bit greedy on the throttle at turn 14 and had a spin through the gravel."Despite these setbacks, Antonelli remains focused on future sessions: "It is a shame as we had the potential for a lot more today. It was a mistake from my side but now we will focus on getting the car in a good place for tomorrow's qualifying session."
