Lewis Hamilton expressed his astonishment after securing pole position with a record-breaking lap time at the Chinese Grand Prix's sprint race. This achievement came after a disappointing start to the season at the Australian Grand Prix, where he finished 10th. Hamilton's impressive lap time of 1:30.849 broke the previous Shanghai International Circuit record set by Michael Schumacher in 2004.
Hamilton's performance on Friday was a significant improvement from his eighth-place qualification in Australia. He managed to outperform Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri to claim P1. "I didn't know when we would get to this position and, after last weekend, it was a difficult start to the week," Hamilton stated. "I came here with aggression and wanting to go into the weekend and get the car into a great place."

Despite acknowledging more work is needed, Hamilton believes Friday's results provide Ferrari with optimism for Sunday's main race. He remarked, "Even though it's not the main pole, it gives me real inspiration to go into tomorrow and try to find more performance and see if we can compete again." He remains confident that there is still room for improvement.
Hamilton's teammate Charles Leclerc qualified fourth, while Mercedes' George Russell secured fifth place. Lando Norris, leading the drivers' championship early on, took sixth position. Leclerc admitted facing challenges during qualifying, saying, "I struggled on my side of the garage. From the beginning I felt I was a step back from Lewis and he was just faster."
Leclerc noted difficulties particularly in turns one through three, similar to issues faced last year. Despite these challenges, he remains hopeful for a strong race alongside Hamilton who starts from pole position. "It's a shame we start P4 but Lewis is on pole and hopefully we can have a strong race," Leclerc added.
The shorter sprint race on Saturday will allow teams to make adjustments before Sunday's main event. Hamilton has won this race six times previously, showcasing his expertise at this circuit. His determination and skill were evident as he expressed disbelief at being at the front once again.
"I started out straight away with a better feeling in the car and I can't believe we are at the front," Hamilton said about his performance improvements since Australia. His focus now shifts towards maintaining this momentum throughout the weekend.
