Hamilton And Piastri Anticipate Competitive Season At Australian Grand Prix 2025

As the Australian Grand Prix approaches, Lewis Hamilton looks forward to his Ferrari debut while Oscar Piastri aims for success on home soil. Both drivers expect a highly competitive season in Formula One.

Lewis Hamilton is eagerly anticipating his debut with Ferrari as the 2025 Formula One season kicks off at the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday. This marks the first time since 2019 that Albert Park will open the F1 season, with many predicting a highly competitive year. Max Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive drivers' championship in 2024, but seven different drivers claimed race wins, and McLaren's Lando Norris provided stiff competition.

Hamilton's move from Mercedes to Ferrari has generated excitement, as he aims to end Ferrari's championship drought since Kimi Raikkonen's victory in 2007. He becomes the 98th driver to race for Ferrari and their first British driver since Eddie Irvine in 1999. Hamilton expressed his eagerness to start, stating, "I've been just itching to get going. It's been a long time coming, and to think that this is my first Grand Prix, one of those firsts with the team, I feel very honoured and grateful to have the opportunity."

Hamilton and Piastri Ready for F1 Season

Hamilton anticipates a closely contested battle at the top of the standings this year. He emphasised that Ferrari's primary goal should always be winning championships. Reflecting on pre-season testing, he noted how competitive it looks among teams. "It's difficult to know who's where. It looks really close between us all," he said.

Joining a new team requires time to build trust and respect, which are crucial for success. Hamilton acknowledged that while respect is given, trust develops over time. He stressed that achieving high performance quickly is vital for securing results and advancing the team.

McLaren enters the season as defending constructors' champions and aims to retain their title for the first time since their four-year streak from 1988 to 1991. While Norris is considered a favourite for the drivers' title by many observers, teammate Oscar Piastri seeks success on home turf this weekend and embraces the pressure of competing in a championship race.

Piastri expressed confidence in McLaren's prospects this year: "This year, I think we're as confident as we have been since I've joined the team, that we can start the year off on a good note." He relishes being in a position where others are chasing him, believing it indicates they're doing something right.

Drivers to Watch

Piastri believes up to eight drivers could realistically contend for the title this year. Among them are Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Mercedes' George Russell. "There's probably eight drivers that can realistically achieve that this year," Piastri said.

Lewis Hamilton has enjoyed significant success at the Australian Grand Prix before, securing pole position eight times there—only Hungary has seen him achieve more poles (nine). The seven-time world champion also took pole when this race last opened the season in 2019 but has only managed one pole position in his last 69 races (in Hungary in 2023).

Piastri's Home Challenge

No Australian driver has ever won or started on pole at their home Grand Prix since it became part of the F1 calendar in 1985. The best achievements by home drivers include three fastest laps—by Mark Webber in 2010 and Daniel Ricciardo in both 2016 and 2018.

Piastri narrowly missed out on a podium finish behind teammate Norris at last year's event but hopes for better results after securing his first two race wins last season. As a serious title contender in 2025, Piastri has finished each of his last 28 races contested.

If he extends this streak to 29 races here, he'll join Fernando Alonso's run between China 2013 and Belgium 2014 as joint-eighth longest such streaks in F1 history.
