Hamilton May Consider Retirement If Ferrari Remains Uncompetitive, Predicts Damon Hill

Damon Hill suggests that Lewis Hamilton might retire if Ferrari cannot deliver a competitive car. Hamilton's motivation could wane as he struggles for pace in F1.

Lewis Hamilton's status as the greatest driver in Formula One is already secure, according to Damon Hill, the 1996 champion. Hill believes Hamilton should not extend his career if Ferrari cannot provide a competitive car. Hamilton ended his successful 12-year run with Mercedes in 2024, having won six of his seven titles with them. Only Michael Schumacher matches this record.

Hamilton has more race wins and pole positions than any other driver in F1 history, with 105 victories and 104 poles. However, since joining Ferrari, he has struggled for speed. His fourth-place finish at the Austrian Grand Prix was his best result in red so far, matching a similar performance at Imola in May. He currently sits sixth in the drivers' standings, trailing leader Oscar Piastri by 125 points.

Hamilton's Future Depends on Ferrari's Performance

Damon Hill expressed doubts about Ferrari's ability to give Hamilton the car he needs. "Ferrari are not where they want to be," Hill said. Although Hamilton won a sprint race in China, Hill sees it as an exception rather than a trend. He noted that Hamilton finds it harder to perform without a fast car.

Hill mentioned that Hamilton spent years at Mercedes dealing with an underperforming car before moving to Ferrari hoping for improvement. "I think he's holding his head above water at the moment," Hill added, suggesting motivation could become an issue if results don't improve.

When asked if Ferrari could help Hamilton achieve an eighth title, Hill responded: "If it is a winning car, then you find extra motivation." He questioned whether Hamilton would endure another season or two with an uncompetitive car when he doesn't need to prove anything further.

"He'll always go down in history as being the winningest," Hill stated. With seven titles and more wins and poles than anyone else, Hamilton's legacy is already established. Hill also praised Hamilton for promoting inclusivity in F1 as its first black driver.

A Legacy Beyond Racing

"He was also the first black racing driver and almost unquestionably the quickest," Hill remarked. Even if Max Verstappen wins eight titles, Lewis will remain a significant figure due to his achievements and role as a trailblazer for diversity.

"I think he's found extra motivation after carrying the standard for being a black racing driver," Hill continued. He highlighted how Hamilton has always seen himself as unique and has stayed true to that identity throughout his career.

The documentary "Hill" will be available on Sky and streaming service NOW in July. This film will explore various aspects of Damon Hill's life and career, offering insights into both his personal journey and professional achievements.
