Lewis Hamilton enjoyed a memorable day at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, achieving his best result for Ferrari amidst a passionate crowd of Scuderia supporters at Imanol. Despite a challenging qualifying session that saw Charles Leclerc start 11th and Hamilton 12th, both drivers made significant progress during the race. A late safety car helped close the field, allowing Hamilton to finish fourth and Leclerc sixth.
Ferrari had anticipated that upgrades to their car's rear would improve their performance, but both drivers were eliminated before reaching the top-10 qualifying shoot-out. Leclerc humorously remarked they were "P-nowhere." However, fresher tyres enabled Hamilton to overtake his teammate in the final laps, securing his highest finish for Ferrari and narrowly missing out on a podium spot.

Previously, Hamilton's top finish with Ferrari was fifth at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Despite this improvement, he remains sixth in the drivers' championship standings with 53 points, trailing Leclerc by 12 points. Reflecting on the race, Hamilton expressed surprise at finishing fourth given their starting positions. He praised the team's strategy and execution, highlighting engineer Riccardo Adami's excellent communication.
"I'm so, so happy," Hamilton told Sky Sports. "The experience with the Tifosi, wow... thank you to everyone who came out." He described seeing the sea of red as special and reminiscent of watching Michael Schumacher race there in earlier times. The atmosphere felt nostalgic and exhilarating for him.
In a dramatic conclusion to the race, Leclerc was penalised for forcing Alex Albon off track and had to relinquish fifth place back to the Williams driver. Despite this setback, Leclerc remained unapologetic about his aggressive approach. "You've got to race with heart and put your elbows out," he stated. Starting from P11 was frustrating for him as he couldn't accept their current situation.
Leclerc acknowledged that not pitting during the second safety car made his race more challenging. He admitted pushing boundaries but felt it was necessary given their position on the grid. The Monegasque driver emphasised racing with passion even if it meant occasionally crossing limits.
The weekend highlighted Ferrari's ongoing efforts to improve performance amid fierce competition. Both drivers showcased resilience by advancing through challenging circumstances during Sunday's race despite initial setbacks in qualifying sessions.
