James Harden Impresses Cavaliers Coach Atkinson After Pistons Win

James Harden delivered late for the Cleveland Cavaliers, closing out a 116-109 win over the Detroit Pistons that kept the series alive. Detroit still holds a 2-1 edge after three games, but Harden’s fourth-quarter surge shifted momentum and gave Cleveland renewed confidence in a tight play-off battle.

The 11-time All-Star finished with 19 points, striking when the game was on the line, with nine of those coming in the final quarter. Cleveland needed a response after two losses, and Harden produced in the closing stages against a Pistons defence that had limited Harden earlier in the series.

Across the opening two games of the series, Harden shot only 32%, which raised questions about form and fitness. Those early struggles contrasted with Harden’s long record of consistency, having reached the postseason in all 17 of Harden’s NBA seasons, and set the stage for a sharper display in Game 3.

Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson highlighted how familiar Harden’s performance looked to those who watched past play-off runs. Atkinson said: "It's the James Harden I've seen for how many years he's been in the NBA, Cavs coach Atkinson said. That's the James we know. We needed it. It was the variety of his repertoire that was impressive."

Harden arrived in Cleveland before the trade deadline earlier this season, with the organisation targeting extra play-off experience and late-game shot creation. The plan was not for Harden to dominate every night, but to change tight contests, especially in fourth quarters, where possessions slow and decisions matter more.

Harden explained the approach to this role and the expectations around scoring numbers and usage. Harden said: "I didn't average 30 points in the regular season; you know what I mean? I'm literally here to find my spots, figure out what needs to be done and try to contribute in the best way possible, Harden said. Chatter is going to be chatter regardless. Whether you do something good, whether you do something bad. For me, still, you give me opportunities in this fourth quarter, and I take advantage of them. I've done an unbelievable job throughout the course of my career of just understanding what the job needs to be, especially as I get older and doing whatever it takes to win the game. That's the most important thing. When my number is called, just getting to my spots. It's something I work on literally every day. It's basically repetition and it's the confidence to go out there and do it."

The win did not change the Pistons’ 2-1 series lead, yet it underlined Harden’s importance for the Cleveland Cavaliers in late-game moments. With Detroit still ahead, Cleveland will again look to Harden’s decision making, shot selection and daily repetition as the series moves into its decisive phase.
