Harmeet Desai-Yashaswini Ghorpade End India’s 72-Year Wait For Asian Table Tennis Championships Medal
India's Harmeet Desai and Yashaswini Ghorpade have scripted a historic chapter in Indian table tennis, securing at least a bronze medal in mixed doubles at the Asian Table Tennis Championships in Tashkent.
The Indian duo defeated South Korea's Park Ganghyeon and Lee Daeun 3-2 in a thrilling quarterfinal on Friday to book their place in the last four.

The victory marks a landmark moment for Indian table tennis, ending a 72-year wait for a mixed doubles medal at the continental championships. India had last reached the podium in the event in 1954, making the achievement of Harmeet and Yashaswini particularly special.
With a medal now assured, the Indian combination will look to take another step towards glory when they face Japan's Sora Matsushima and Miwa Harimoto in the semifinals. A win would take the pair into the final, putting them within touching distance of a historic gold medal.
The Indian duo displayed resilience under pressure to overcome their South Korean opponents in a closely contested five-game encounter. Their hard-fought victory not only secured a place in the semifinals but also guaranteed India a podium finish in an event where the country had been waiting decades for another medal.
The upcoming semifinal, however, presents another stern challenge, with the Japanese pair standing between the Indians and a place in the title clash. Harmeet and Yashaswini will need to maintain their composure and build on their quarterfinal performance to extend their remarkable campaign.
India's other mixed doubles combination, Payas Jain and Syndrela Das, could not join their compatriots in the semifinals. The Indian pair suffered a 0-3 defeat against China's Yi Chen and Huang Youzheng in their quarterfinal encounter, bringing their campaign to an end.
The historic run also offers Harmeet and Yashaswini an opportunity to make a strong statement after missing out on medals at the recent Asian Games.
Harmeet featured in three events at the Games but could not secure a podium finish. In the men's team competition, India reached the round of 16 before being eliminated by South Korea. His mixed doubles partnership with Yashaswini also ended in the quarterfinals following a defeat to China's Lin Shidong and Kuai Man.
The Indian paddler subsequently teamed up with Sathiyan Gnanasekaran in men's doubles, but their campaign came to a halt in the third round after they lost to Japan's Sora Matsushima and Shunsuke Togami.
Yashaswini also endured a challenging outing at the Asian Games. Her women's singles campaign ended in the third round against Japan's Miwa Harimoto. In women's doubles, she partnered Diya Chitale, with the Indian combination reaching the quarterfinals before losing 0-3 to China's Fan Shuhan and Chen Yi.
Having already secured a place on the podium, Harmeet and Yashaswini will now turn their attention to the semifinal against Japan. The contest offers them an opportunity to go beyond a bronze medal and reach the final of one of the continent's biggest table tennis competitions.
Regardless of the semifinal outcome, the Indian pair have already achieved a significant milestone by ending the country's 72-year wait for a mixed doubles medal at the Asian Table Tennis Championships. A victory over Japan would make their campaign even more memorable and bring India a step closer to continental gold.
