Haryana Election 2024: Vinesh Phogat visits counting centre in Jind, takes lead after Latest Round

By MyKhel Staff

Former India wrestler Vinesh Phogat was seen at the counting centre in Jind amid the counting of the Haryana Election on Tuesday (October 9).

Phogat, who is fighting from the Julana constituency under the Indian National Congress ticket, visited the counting centre. She spent a few minutes there and then left as ANI shared a video on social media.

At the time of her arrival, Phogat was leading the election but after Round 4 of counting, she was trailing by over 3,000 votes.

Phogat made it to the final of the Olympics a couple of months earlier in Paris, but then was stripped off from her match due to being overweight in her category on the morning of the final. She then went to court against the Olympic committee's decision but lost the verdict.

Over the past month, she has been in direct battle against Bharatiya Janata Party and was also a prominent face in the wrestler's protest against former WFI president Brij Bhushan Singh, who was accused of physical molestation of wrestlers.

Upon returning to India after the Olympics fiasco, Vinesh joined INC and has been in the election battle in her own state of Haryana. Her constituency Julana is around 80 km away from Balali in the Charkhi Dadri district, where the wrestler was born.

The people's mandate for the Haryana Legislative Assembly is still poised nicely but the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken a substantial lead and currently holds majority in the state.

As per the official website of the Election Commission of India (ECI), the BJP lead in 49 seats and the Congress have the lead in 35 seats. For the majority, a party requires 46 seats in Haryana.
