Hero Honda Indian Open offers $1 million dollar prize money

New Delhi, Jul 3 (UNI) The Indian golf will see a mouth watering One million dollar (US) prize money for the 45th edition of the Hero Honda Indian Open that kicks off from October 9 to 12 at the Delhi Golf Club here.

Hero Honda Indian Open, one of the most prestigious event on the Asian Tour, doubled the prize money this time in comparison to last year's prize fund as a result of the growing popularity of the sport in the country.

Last year, India's Jyoti Randhawa won the tournament, thereby becoming only the second player to lift the trophy three times.

The only other player to achieve the 'threepeat' is Australian legend Peter Thomson, who also claimed the inaugural Indian Open in 1964.

Asian Tour Executive Chairman Kyi Hla Han lauded the increase in the tournament's prize fund and said, ''It is a wonderful reflection of the growth of professional golf in India and across Asia.

''On behalf of our talented players, I would like to extend our fullest appreciation to Hero Honda for their steadfast support towards the Asian Tour, and with enhanced prize money every year. The Asian Tour's 2008 season is poised for a record year with our schedule offering an all-time high of 29 tournaments and over 38 million dollar (US) in prize money,'' he added.
