Houston Open: Theegala Holds T-11 As Woodland Surges Into Command

Sahith Theegala remains near the top by shooting 3-under 67 to stay tied for 11th at 6-under. Gary Woodland jumps to a 12-under total after a 7-under round, while Sudarshan Yellamaraju and Nicolai Hojgaard also posted strong rounds. The Houston Open field features several movers as the weekend approaches.

Gary Woodland moved into the lead at the Texas Children’s Houston Open after two rounds. Woodland shot a 7-under 63 on March 28 to reach 12-under par. Sahith Theegala stayed in contention at 6-under and tied 11th. Sudarshan Yellamaraju climbed to 5-under and tied 20th.

Woodland’s second round included eight birdies and one bogey. The birdies came on holes 3, 5, 8, 10, 12, 16, 17, and 18. Woodland dropped the only shot on the 13th. The four-time PGA TOUR winner had surgery for a brain lesion in September 2023.

Theegala posted a second straight 3-under 67 to stay tied 11th at 6-under. Paul Waring also held that spot after a 1-over 71. Yellamaraju improved sharply with rounds of 69 and 66. The 24-year-old arrived ranked just inside the top 30.

Theegala started the second round on the front nine and made two early gains. Theegala birdied the 5th and 6th holes in succession. A bogey on the 8th was the only setback. Theegala added birdies on the 13th and 16th to close the 67.

Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard produced the lowest round of the tournament so far. Højgaard fired an 8-under 62 to reach 10-under and tied second. The card included seven birdies, one eagle, and one bogey. Jackson Suber matched 10-under with a bogey-free 7-under 63.

Woodland returned to competition at the 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii after the 2023 surgery. Woodland had finished tied second at this event last year. After 36 holes, Woodland led by three shots over Højgaard and Suber. Theegala and Yellamaraju remained within range as the weekend approached.
