How India Fared at last World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali?

The World Athletics U20 Championships, often referred to as the Junior Worlds, have been a significant platform for emerging track and field talent globally. With the 2024 World Athletics U20 Championships set to take place in Lima, Peru, from August 27 to 31, India is preparing to build on its previous success.

The upcoming edition will see a larger contingent of 43 athletes, indicating the growing strength and depth of Indian track and field. As India continues to nurture its young talent, the performances at the 2022 Championships in Cali serve as a promising sign of the country’s potential on the global stage.

India’s Medal Triumphs

At the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships, India secured three medals, marking a commendable achievement for the nation. The Indian contingent, consisting of 31 athletes, made their presence felt with two silver medals and one bronze, finishing tied for 25th place in the overall medal standings.

Selva P Thirumaran Shines in Triple Jump

One of India’s standout performers was Selva P Thirumaran, who clinched a silver medal in the men’s triple jump. Thirumaran, with a personal best leap of 16.15 meters, made history as the first Indian to win a medal in this event at the U20 Championships. His impressive jump secured him the silver medal, trailing only behind Jaydon Hibbert of Jamaica, who won gold with a championship record effort of 17.27 meters.

Viktor Morozov of Estonia completed the podium with a bronze, jumping 16.13 meters. Thirumaran's silver-winning jump came on his second attempt, with his other valid attempts measuring 16.11 meters and 16.09 meters, showcasing his consistent performance throughout the competition.

Mixed 4x400m Relay Achieves Silver

Another highlight for India was the performance of the mixed 4x400m relay team. The quartet, consisting of Priya Mohan, Barath Sridhar, Rupal Chaudhary, and Kapil, excelled in their relay event, clinching the silver medal. Their exceptional performance not only earned them a place on the podium but also set a new Asian record with a remarkable time of 3:17.76. This achievement underscored the team's coordination and speed, marking a significant milestone in Indian athletics.

Rupal Chaudhary’s Dual Success

Rupal Chaudhary was another key athlete who contributed to India's success at the Championships. She won a bronze medal in the women’s 400m, adding to her earlier achievement in the mixed relay. Chaudhary’s performance was particularly notable as she became the first Indian to win two medals in the same edition of the Junior Worlds. Her bronze in the 400m event was a testament to her skill and endurance, enhancing India’s overall medal tally at the event.

The 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships were a significant event for India, showcasing the emerging talent and competitive spirit of young Indian athletes.
