"I Made 20m Look Too Big In My Mind": Samardeep Gill Breakthrough Throw Changes Everything
There are moments in athletics when years of struggle, self-doubt, and silent hard work finally explode into one unforgettable performance. For Samardeep Gill, that moment arrived in Ranchi.
With a massive throw of 20.46m at the Federation Cup, Samardeep not only shattered the biggest barrier of his career but also entered Indian athletics history. The throw earned him the Commonwealth Games qualification mark of 20.36m and made him just the ninth Indian ever to cross the prestigious 20m mark in men's shot put.

More importantly, it was the throw that changed the way Samardeep looked at himself. "I'm really, really happy," Samardeep told myKhel after the competition.
"The main thing for me was to break the 20m barrier because that was the qualification mark for the Commonwealth Games. I used to feel a lot of guilt because whenever I travelled outside India, I would see athletes younger than me throwing beyond 20m. I kept thinking, 'What is wrong with me?'"
For years, the 20m mark felt like a mountain standing in front of him. In Ranchi, he finally climbed it. And he did it in style.
After opening with 18.64m, Samardeep slowly built momentum with throws of 19.56m and 19.45m before producing the magical 20.46m effort in the fourth round. He backed it up with two more throws beyond 20m - 20.22m and 20.03m, proving it was no accident but a statement performance.
A throw to remember. A milestone to celebrate. The achievement now places Samardeep among some of the biggest names in Indian shot put history, including Tajinderpal Singh Toor, Om Prakash Karhana and Inderjit Singh. At 20.46m, he is now India's sixth-best shot putter of all time and the 14th-best Asian performer in history.
Former national record holder Om Prakash Karhana believes this is only the beginning "Samardeep will break the 21m barrier very soon," Karhana told myKhel.
Karhana, himself one of India's greatest throwers, also spoke warmly about Samardeep's coach Sandeep Singh.
"Samardeep's coach was my batchmate, and he is a very passionate person. I felt extremely happy today that Samardeep achieved this milestone."
The rise of Samardeep Gill has not happened overnight. Before 2025, he had crossed 19m only once in his career. But last season marked a turning point. He consistently produced 19m throws across competitions and even defeated national record holder Tajinderpal Singh Toor three times.
His international journey also began to take shape. At the Asian Championships in Gumi, his first senior international competition, Samardeep finished sixth with 19.25m. Soon after, at the World University Games in Germany, he again secured sixth place with 19.16m. Those competitions may not have brought medals, but they brought belief, experience, and hunger.
Then came the Inter-State Championships in Chennai, where he threw a personal best of 19.82m to win gold. Later, at the South Asian Athletics Championships in Ranchi, he claimed one of the biggest medals of his career with 19.59m.
Still, the start of 2026 tested him badly.
He finished fifth at the Asian Indoor Championships in Tianjin and then suffered a shocking dip at the Indian Open Throws Competition in Patiala, where he managed only 16.88m and ended 11th.
For many athletes, such performances can break confidence. But Samardeep responded the only way champions do by working harder.
At the Indian Open Athletics Series in Bengaluru, he returned with 19.74m. And in Ranchi, everything finally clicked. Interestingly, Samardeep said he already sensed something special was coming.
"Yes, I felt that I would throw beyond 20m today because I had arrived in Ranchi 10 days earlier to adapt to the conditions," he revealed.
"My coach told me, 'Samardeep, we should go early.' However, there were some problems because another competition was going on, so we were not allowed to practice at the main venue. Then we went to Khel Gaon and practiced there instead. So overall, it turned out to be quite a good adventure."
That "adventure" has now become one of the defining stories of the Federation Cup.
For Indian athletics, Samardeep Gill's 20.46m is more than just a statistic. It is the emergence of a thrower who now belongs among the country's elite. A powerful reminder that patience, persistence, and belief can eventually break even the biggest barriers.
And for Samardeep himself, the dream is now even clearer "Going forward, more opportunities will open up for me, and now I will represent India once again," he said.
"I want to make India proud, and I truly want to wear the Indian jersey with 'India' written on my back."
