Indian pugilists created history as a memorable campaign ended for them with three medals in the IBA Men's World Boxing Championships 2023. The tournament took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan and ended on Friday (May 12).
Three Indian boxers have capped off the tournament with medals in the campaign. Deepak Kumar, Mohammed Hussamuddin and Nishant Dev rounded off a fantastic campaign with three Bronze medals.

India, with three Bronze medals, finished joint-fourth in the prestigious tournament. Uzbekistan (9), Cuba and Russia (6), and Kazakhstan (5) took the top three spots in the tournament.
A tenacious effort from Deepak Kumar (51 kg) saw him taking on France's Billal Bennama in the semi-finals. He made a valiant effort but went down 3-4 after the review of the bout. It was a fantastic effort from the Haryana-born boxer, who came back after conceding the first round.

Nishant Dev (71 kg) also had a stellar display against the defending Asian Champion Aslanbek Shymbergenov of Kazakhstan, but went down 2-5 in the match. At just 22, Dev showed some excellent skills with a swift and aggressive approach, but it was not enough.

It was a disappointing night for Hussamuddin though. The two-time Commonwealth Games Bronze medallist sustained a knee injury and couldn't compete in the semi-finals. He had to give a walkover as the Indian settled with a bronze.
History was made in Tashkent as India racked up 3 medals from a single edition of the World Championships for the first time in history. It will be a massive boost for the upcoming pugilists as the trio have elevated the bar big time.
With their wins, the Indian Bronze medallists have also won an award of USD 50,000 each, which is around INR 41 lakh.
