Macau, May 17 (UNI) Riding the form of his life, Gaurav Ghei sizzled with an impeccable six-under 65 round to stay just one stroke off the pace after Day One of the 300,000 dollar Macau Open here today.
Ghei, who triumphed at the Pine Valley Beijing Open last month, reeled off four birdies and a stunning eagle to grab tied second place with four others.
The Indian was hot on the heels of Australian Leigh McKechnie, who grabbed the sole lead after a blemish-free seven-under 64 at the par-71 Macau Golf and Country Club.
Infact it was turned out to be a good day for the Indians and not far behind was the quartet of Rahil Gangjee, Uttam Mundy, Digvijay Singh and Arjun Singh, all carding an identical four-under 67 for tied 13 position.
However, it was 39-year-old Ghei who made the maximum of ideal scoring conditions. Playing his back nine first, he began with birdie on the 10th. Ghei picked another stroke on the 15th hole before hitting a sensational eagle on the 18th to turn at four-under.
He continued the good work on the front nine as well and gained a stroke on the par-three sixth before signing off with another birdie.
''The course was there for the taking,'' said the Indian, presently eighth on the UBS Order of Merit.
Among other Indians in the fray, Gaganjeet Bhullar and Sujjan Singh were tied 51st after carding one-under 70.
Amritinder Singh (72), SSp Chowrasia (72), Harmeet Kahlon (73) and Gurbaaz Mann (73) were lying below the projected cut.
