Horner States It's Impossible To Confirm Verstappen's Future With Red Bull For 2026

Christian Horner has expressed uncertainty regarding Max Verstappen's future with Red Bull in 2026. Despite a contract until 2028, speculation continues following discussions with Mercedes. Horner remains confident but acknowledges the possibility of change.

Christian Horner, the Red Bull team principal, has expressed uncertainty about Max Verstappen's presence with the team in 2026. Recent rumours have intensified after George Russell hinted at discussions between Mercedes and Verstappen before the Austrian Grand Prix. Toto Wolff later confirmed these talks. Despite this, Verstappen stated on Thursday that his position remains unchanged.

Verstappen's contract with Red Bull extends until 2028, but there are reports of clauses that might allow an early exit. Horner is optimistic about Red Bull's appeal to the four-time world champion. However, he acknowledged a slight possibility that Verstappen might not continue with them for the next Formula One season.

Uncertainty Over Verstappen's Red Bull Future

Horner emphasised their strong relationship with Verstappen and mentioned that their agreement details remain confidential. "We are just focused on performing. If things stay as they are, 100% he will be with us next year," Horner told Sky Italy. When asked if he was certain about Verstappen staying, Horner replied, "It's impossible to say 100%."

The speculation began when George Russell suggested potential talks between Mercedes and Verstappen. This led to further reports of escalating discussions, although Verstappen denied any changes from his side. Horner questioned whether it was clear if Russell would definitely be at Mercedes next year.

Currently third in the drivers' standings with 155 points, Verstappen trails McLaren's Oscar Piastri by 61 points. This season, he has secured victories at the Japanese and Emilia-Romagna Grands Prix. However, he faced a setback after retiring from the Austrian Grand Prix due to a collision with Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli.

Horner confirmed that performance clauses exist in Verstappen's contract but reiterated his confidence in retaining him. "The contracts between drivers and teams are always going to remain confidential," he said. "With any driver's contract, there is an element of a performance mechanism."

Interest from Other Teams

"Absolutely, his intention is that he will be there and driving for us in 2026," Horner stated confidently. He acknowledged that other teams would naturally show interest in Verstappen given his talent and performance on the track.

The speculation was likely triggered by George Russell trying to leverage his situation for clarity regarding his own future. Horner noted Russell's impressive season as a reason for this manoeuvre. He stressed the importance of maintaining clarity between Max and Red Bull amidst ongoing rumours.

The ongoing discussions about Max Verstappen's future highlight the dynamic nature of Formula One contracts and team strategies. While uncertainties remain, both Red Bull and Verstappen seem committed to continuing their partnership beyond this season.
