India at Paris Olympics: Mary Kom resigned as the Chef de Mission for India's contingent at the Paris Olympics, citing personal reasons and the need to be with her family. Despite initially accepting the role, she expressed embarrassment at retracting her commitment but ultimately felt she had no choice.
On March 21, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) revealed the contingent officials for the Paris Olympics, which will start on July 26. Mary Kom was selected as the chef de mission, and winter Olympian Shiva Keshavan was appointed as her deputy.

In a letter to IOA President PT Usha, the Union Sports Ministry, and the Sports Authority of India, Mary Kom, the London Olympics bronze medallist, expressed her feelings by stating, "It is embarrassing for me to retreat from a pronounced commitment, which I seldom do, but I am left with no choice."
Mary initially hesitated to accept the role of Chef de Mission but eventually agreed after being persuaded by Usha and other government officials. In her letter, Mary conveyed her sincere appreciation for the trust placed in her. She said, "I considered it an honor to serve my country in every way possible and I was mentally prepared for it."
Gagan Narang replaces Mary Kom as Chef de Mission for Paris Olympics 2024
The IOA accepted her resignation and appointed Gagan Narang as India's Chef de Mission for the Paris Olympics. Usha stated that Gagan Narang's promotion from the deputy Chef de Mission position to the Chef de Mission role was a natural decision following Mary Kom's resignation.
"I was looking for an Olympic medallist to lead our contingent and my young colleague is an apt replacement for Mary Kom," Usha said in a press release.
Narang, the London Olympics bronze medalist in the men's 10m air rifle event, was assigned the responsibility of managing India's activities at the shooting range, which is located quite a distance away from the primary venues.
With a record number of 21 shooters qualifying for the Games, India will be sending its largest-ever shooting contingent to the Paris Olympics. Following Narang's appointment as the Chef de Mission, the IOA will now need to find a replacement for him at the shooting range.
