India bags two gold medals in World Cadet Boxing

New Delhi, Sept 8: Vikas Yadav and Vipin Kumar did India proud by winning two gold while Umesh Yadav fetched a silver in the sixth World Cadet Boxing Championships at Baku, Azerbaijan, today.

Vikas and Vipin defeated Ciprian Apodaresei of Romania and Gamal Yafai of England in the 48kg and 50kg category finals while Umesh lost to local challenger Elvin Isayev in 46 kg at the Baku Sports Hall.

Vikas began aggressively and took 9-2 lead after the first round and though the Romanian recovered in the second round by scoring seven points to Vipin's three, the Indian had the last laugh by edging his opponent in a close third round (8-5) and wrapped up the bout 20-14 to claim the first gold for India.

Vipin also was not tested much by his English opponent and led 6-3 by the end of first round. The Indian took the bout out of Gamal's reach by racing to 13-4 lead after the second round and just had to ensure he did not give scoring chances to his opponent in the third to win the fight 17-6 and take the second gold for India.

The third Indian in the finals, Umesh, however, turned out a mismatch to his local opponent and the Indian trailed 4-8 in the first round and received a volley of punches in the second round that the referee had to stop the bout when the Azebaijani was leading 21-6 to get an RSC outscored verdict, according to information received here.

India were represented by five pugilists in the the AIBA-sanctioned 13-category event for the juniors.

Parmod Kumar (52kg) and Vankala Durgarao (54kg) had lost in the quarter-finals.

Results: 46 kg (Final): Umesh Yadav lost to Elvin Isayev (AZE) RSC (OS) Rd II 48 kg (Final): Vikas Yadav beat Ciprian Apodaresei (ROM) 20-14 50 kg (Final): Vipin Kumar beat Gamal Yafai (ENG) 17-6.
