Boxing World Cup 2026: Deepak, Poonam Advance As India Endure Tough Opening Day In China
New Delhi, June 15: Deepak and Poonam were the only Indian winners on the opening day of the Boxing World Cup (Stage 2) in China, with both boxers reaching the next round in their classes. Seven other Indian boxers lost their bouts across the preliminary rounds and quarterfinals.
Poonam took a clear 5-0 win over Uzbekistan’s Aziza Yokubova in the women’s 54kg preliminary round of 32. Deepak also moved ahead with a unanimous 5-0 verdict against Turkmenistan’s Bayramdurdy Nurmuhammedov in the men’s 70kg preliminary round of 32.

Other Indian bouts
Rishi Singh (50kg) lost to Azerbaijan’s Subhan Mamedov in the preliminary round of 16, while Sanamacha Chanu Thokchom (75kg) went down against Canada’s Tammara Thibeault. Sawan Gill also exited after losing to Norway’s Omar Shiha in the men’s 90kg category.
