India goalkeeper Subrata Paul set for trial with German club

By Pti
New Delhi, Jul 20: Subrata Paul, who has been India's number one goalkeeper till recently, is heading to Germany for a trial stint at RB Leipzig, a fourth division club.

"I'm a fan of German team and their former goalkeeper Oliver Kahn. By God's grace if I get a chance to play in the Bundesliga my dream will come true," Paul said.

Paul, who spent most of the last I-League season injured, is likely to leave for Germany on Friday for a three-week stint in the German city of Leipzig.

His trial will be sponsored by energy drink-maker Red Bull, with which he has a tie-up. Red Bull recently bought the club.

"I'm confident that RB Leipzig is the place where I can really push myself and can develop myself into a better and stronger player."

"I am grateful to my club and AIFF for granting me the permission," Paul said.

Paul was supposed to go for trial on Jul 16 but had to delay it due to some visa issues.

He had an unsuccessful trial stint at FC Vancouver in Canada in 2009.

Paul has been India's number one goalkeeper for quite some time under English coach Bob Houghton. He starred in the two Nehru Cup victories here in 2007 and 2009.

He was also impressive in India's Asia Cup campaign in Doha in Jan 2011.
