Para shooters Avani Lekhara and Mona Agarwal opened India's account in Paris Paralympics 2024 with gold and bronze medals respectively in the R2 - Women's 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 event on Friday (August 30).
Tokyo 2020 champion Avani defended her title successfully by breaking her own Paralympic record after Korean Yunri Lee faltered in her last shot in the final at the Chateauroux Shooting Range.

Avani set a new Paralympic record with a total of 249.7, bettering her previous record of 249.6. The Korean shot a disappointing 6.8 in her final shot to finish with 246.8, handing the gold on the plate to defending champion Avani, and also missed out on setting a record.
Mona Agarwal, on the other hand, led the standings in the closing moments, but had to settle for bronze with a total of 228.7. With this, she became India's first medallist in Paris Paralympics, while Avani soon won the country's first gold of the Paralympic Games.
Later, para athlete Preethi Pal clinched a bronze in the women's 100m - T35 event to swell India's tally to 3. Preethi finished third with a personal best timing of 14.21. China's Xia Zhou and Guo Qianqian won the gold and silver medals respectively.
Manish Narwal added India's fourth medal at the Games with a silver in P1 Men's 10 Air Pistol Standing SH1 event. The Indian para pistol shooter finished with a total of 234.9, while Korea's Jo Jeongdu clinched gold with a total of 237.4.
China continued to swell their tally with a bronze in the P1 Men's 10 Air Pistol Standing SH1 event. India will look to add more medals in the coming days especially in shooting, athletics, badminton and archery.
