India Sporting Heroes Receive National Sports Awards: Gukesh, Manu Bhaker, Harmanpreet Singh Shine

By MyKhel Staff

India's sporting stars were in high spirits after receiving the prestigious National Sports Awards on Friday, with President Droupadi Murmu presenting them with the honours. Among the awardees were chess prodigy D Gukesh, double Olympic medallist shooter Manu Bhaker, men's hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh, and Paralympic gold medallist high jumper Praveen Kumar.

They were all honoured with the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, the highest sporting accolade in India. Gukesh, the youngest-ever chess world champion, became only the second chess player after Viswanathan Anand to receive the coveted Khel Ratna.

Reflecting on his achievement, Gukesh shared his gratitude, stating, "It's a dream come true to be the second chess player after Vishi Anand Sir to receive the Khel Ratna. This is not the end of the journey; I aim to achieve even more for my country." The 18-year-old's triumph over China's Ding Liren last month earned him the title, and he was also instrumental in securing India's men's gold medal at the Chess Olympiad in September.

Men's hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh, whose leadership led to back-to-back Olympic bronze medals for India, was equally moved by the recognition. "This is the biggest recognition of my life. It's a significant achievement, and I'm very happy. The Khel Ratna feels like the best part of my life," said Harmanpreet.

Manu Bhaker, who made history as the first athlete from independent India to win two Olympic medals in a single edition, expressed her gratitude after receiving the Khel Ratna. "It's an honour to receive the Khel Ratna, and I'm deeply thankful for all the support I've received throughout my journey, even during moments of loss," Bhaker remarked.

Bhaker bagged bronze in both the 10m air pistol individual and mixed team events at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Praveen Kumar, who clinched a gold medal in the Paralympics, was also overjoyed. "This award is a reflection of my hard work, dedication, and sacrifices for the sport. I'm truly grateful for this recognition," he said.

Several members of the Indian men's hockey team that competed in the Paris Olympics, including Jarmanpreet Singh, Abhishek, and Sanjay, received the Arjuna Award. Jarmanpreet said, "I'm incredibly thankful for the Arjuna Award. It's a memorable moment after our Olympic bronze, and I hope to contribute even more in the future."

Abhishek echoed similar sentiments, calling the Arjuna Award a significant motivator. Sanjay, proud of his achievements, shared, "Years of hard work have paid off. I'm proud to be both an Olympic medallist and an Arjuna awardee."
