As the political arena gears up for the 18th Lok Sabha elections, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the centre has unveiled its ambitious sports agenda through its manifesto, Sankalp Patra.
Released on April 14 amidst a gathering of key party figures including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and party President JP Nadda, the manifesto outlines a comprehensive roadmap for the development of sports in India.

One of the standout promises in the manifesto is the commitment to host the Olympics in India in 2036, should the BJP come to power. The party pledges to support the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in bidding for the hosting rights of the prestigious event and vows to invest in the development of sports infrastructure, including stadiums and state-of-the-art training centres, to facilitate major international sporting events.
Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed this promise during the 141st International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session held in Mumbai, underscoring the government's dedication to bolstering India's presence on the global sporting stage.
Beyond the grandeur of hosting the Olympics, the BJP's manifesto encompasses a range of initiatives aimed at nurturing and empowering athletes across the nation. The party proposes the launch of a new program tailored for sportspersons, offering them access to educational, employment, and promotional opportunities.
Moreover, the Khelo India Scheme, a flagship initiative aimed at promoting sports at the grassroots level, will be expanded to include more traditional sports. The BJP envisions incentivizing sports goods manufacturing in collaboration with the domestic sports ecosystem, aligning with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
The manifesto further outlines plans to bolster the Khelo India network and other initiatives designed to identify and groom future athletes who can represent India with pride on the international stage.
In a nod to the burgeoning sports startup ecosystem, the BJP vows to promote startups in the sports sector and foster a technology-driven environment conducive to innovation and growth.
With the Lok Sabha elections set to commence on April 19 and results slated for declaration on June 4, 2024, the BJP's sports-centric manifesto underscores the party's commitment to harnessing the power of sports for the holistic development of the nation.
